This is my Season.

"I know that there is nothing better for [me] than to rejoice and to do good in [my] lifetime; moreover that every man who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor-- it is the gift of God."

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

The Death of a Family

I am a total moron when it comes to cooking with a crock pot!! I know! I know!1 It's supposed to be the lifesaver of family dinners.
NOT IN THIS HOUSE!!! It's the death of my family.
First of all I'm on crock pot number 3 because I thought the fault was with the other crocks.
I just spent the day smelling the great aroma of a marinated pork loin and couldn't wait to impress my husband with a great meal.

As I cut it into to slices it laid on the cutting board looking like material used for insulating the spaceships. I knew I failed. I didn't have to taste it but I thought I should understand the misery my family was about to endure. Five minutes later I finished the bite!! That gave me enough time to cook the veggies.

I smothered each slice in applesauce (a tip from my mother-in-law) and served it up. The kids went for the veggies first!! (Does that say anything to you!) My husband sweetly took a second bite and tried to hold in the laughter but couldn't. I don't blame him. I didn't even serve myself a plate!

In substitution of the ease of crock pot dinners I am willing to scrub your toilet for a meal!!

do you want to come over for dinner? We are having swiss steak with mushroom gravy, garlic mashed potatoes, salad with a savory Italian dressing and a cooked fruit dessert.

was that a set up? Did you do that just so that guy with the narrow shoulders would take you out to eat?

Well let's hope that you don't have people "drop by" around dinner time ... or was this your way of hinting?

Okay, Okay, I can't resist actually butting in with some crock pot advice. Do you lift the lid? You CAN NOT lift the lid! And your kids cannot lift the lid! Same with your husband! Every time the lid is lifted the pot takes over an hour to restore its moisture and temperature. That would mean tough, yucky meat.

Beyond that...? I think its a lost cause. Blame it on a faulty crock pot.

Ok, this is coming in a little late, but I read a tip once on how to fix this problem. Take a few pieces of aluminum foil. Roll them into 3 balls and stick them between the insert and the base. This keeps the crock from being directly on the heating element.

Also, I have better luck when I cook boned chicken. It comes out much more tender that boneless anything.
